Trapped in an elevator for 41 hours

Today is in the middle of the 10th anniversary of the day that Nicholas White was trapped in an elevator car in New York City’s McGraw Hill building. This is a time lapse video of the ordeal as captured by the buildings security cameras. The story was first reported in the New Yorker Magazine, in an article by Nick Paumgarten in April of 2008. I have recently recounted this tale to a few friends, some of whom I doubt believed me. At any rate, now that it is the tenth anniversary of this unlucky staffer from Business Week’s trip to nowhere, I thought you all might want to view it. I also highly suggest reading the entire New Yorker article, which takes you through many other elevator stories through the years.

NH Man charged 23 Quadrillion for cigarettes

Josh Muszynski was charged 23 Quadrillion dollars when he bought a five dollar pack of cigarettes at a local convenience store. Visa has said that it was a programming error that resulted in many people across the country to be inadvertantly charged many quadrillions of dollars for small purchases. The following is the story originally reported by WMUR (My former employer).

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Visa said Wednesday that a “temporary programming error” caused to a Manchester man and thousands of others across the country to be charged quadrillions of dollars for small purchases.
Josh Muszynski just wanted to buy a pack of cigarettes at a Mobil gas station, so he was shocked to see a charge on his bank statement of more than $23 quadrillion.
“I thought my card had been compromised,” Muszynski said. “I thought somebody had bought Europe with my credit card. It was very concerning.”

bridal bouquet takes down plane

When good romantic wedding ideas go wrong:

ROME – A romantic wedding in the Tuscan countryside ended with injuries after an attempt to launch the bride’s bouquet from a plane brought down the tiny aircraft. Italian police say two people were hurt in the crash of the ultralight plane after the bridal bouquet they launched got caught in the aircraft’s rear rotor.
The flowers blocked the engine, bringing the plane down by a youth hostel.
Police in the nearby town of Piombino said Tuesday the pilot was lightly injured in Saturday’s crash, while the passenger who threw the bouquet had several broken bones.
The bride and groom were not aboard the plane.

Bank Robber hitches ride from cop

This definitely falls under the stupid criminal category, who decides to rob a bank but doesn’t have a decent get-away plan, I know, people who don’t succeed in robbing banks.

SAGINAW, Mich. – Authorities say a parolee who robbed a Michigan bank was caught when he tried to hitch a ride from an undercover police detective.

Mark E. White was arraigned Friday on charges that include bank robbery and making a false bomb threat. He is being held at the Saginaw County Jail on $755,000 bond. It was not clear whether White had an attorney. Police did not immediately return a message seeking comment Saturday.

Authorities tell The Saginaw News that White flagged down Saginaw Township Detective Scott Jackson on Wednesday after the bank robbery a few blocks away.

White was paroled June 16 after serving time for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and violating an earlier parole.
